1805 HIBERNIA (IRELAND) ½ HALF PENNY: 217 Y/O Specimen!!! VERY COOL!!!

$ 21.38

Availability: 16 in stock
  • Condition: It is 217 years old, so it has aged, it has worn down pretty evenly leaving most all details intact. There are no major scratches or dings or bumps on the surfaces, devices and rim. It has a security rim. Although the details are a bit light everything is intact and it's an Extremely Fine Example of this coin. It could be aUNC and has just been sitting so long that it's just been worn down, because it doesn't really look circulated, but I'm not going to argue for aUNC. I'm going to call this coin Extremely Fine, and remember that's a subjective take on the coins condition...ultimately you have to be the judge so examine the photos carefully. Very nice coin for your collection.

    British currency issues for Ireland in the nineteenth century was erratic and sparse. The only ones that can be called common are the Half Pennies and Pennies of 1805 and the farthings of 1806. These were later restruck in silver, gold, gilt copper and bronzed copper. Stylistically, these strongly resemble the British pennies and English 2 pences dated 1797, suggesting that these were produced by Boulton and Watt of Birmingham (which later became the Heaton Mint) under contract, making it easy to create restrikes as necessary for the territory. In this case, Hibernia. So the 1805 half penny could have been struck in 1805, but as a contract item it could be restruck, as needed, say in 1809, or 1811, whatever? As long as England was still under the reign of George III, so his picture could appear on the coin.
    There also is an absolutely stunning 1806 Bahamas Penny created also by Boulton and Watt; as it was also being produced under private contract, there was no obstacle to producing restrikes, which was done for several decades thereafter. This is the only issue for the islands in the nineteenth century. The Obverse is identical to the English Pennies and half pennies, as well, as those of Hibernia, but the Reverse....Wow!!! I just had to share this with you guys.
