FREE IF YOU MOVE ITMagnificent 1924 Mathushek full size grand piano for sale, reportedly one of five built for the Metropolitan Opera, in my family since.
My grandmother’s brother purchased it for my great grandmother. It’s been a treasured part of my life, but I no longer play, and it needs to go live with someone who will play it regularly and love it the way we always have for its next century.
Mathushek was the Steinway of its day, known for numerous highly innovative piano designs, and this piano has something about the action that was revolutionary for its day. It’s a very unique instrument.
The carving is heavy, but remarkably simple for a Victorian style instrument. This would allow it to look beautiful absolutely anywhere - ornate enough to work in the most traditional style room and clean-lined enough to gracefully complement even the most modern space.
The sounding board is cracked, but all of the keys work perfectly - and the sound is still absolutely marvelous.
There are two good-size watermarks/finish defects on the lid (only one shown) that are easily covered when it’s closed, and the music stand slides a little roughly, but the exterior is otherwise in nearly perfect condition, with heavy wax coating.
Composer’s bench is included. The lacquer has fallen off part of one of the knobs on the bench, but it is otherwise in excellent condition.
I believe the case is mahogany and the keys are ivory. The serial number establishes the age of the instrument, which I believe exempts it from the ivory ban.
Only the piano and bench are part of this listing. Other items shown are NOT included.
antiquepianos.com says grand pianos of this vintage in original condition are worth ,500 - ,000. Restored, this stunning instrument would easily be worth five figures.
Weight is about 700 pounds. It’s about 6-7’ long and 6’ wide.
