The latest issue from Ireland pays tribute to one of the capital city’s most iconic landmarks, that of the Christ Church Cathedral. Originally planned for issue in 2020, the coins’ release was delayed due to the pandemic and is now being issued in late 2021.
The Christ Church site dates to around 1030 and was originally home to a Hiberno-Norse church. This was demolished after the Anglo-Norman invasion and a much grander stone church built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Large parts of this building remain today, including graceful gothic arches and fine medieval carving. The cathedral was heavily restored in the 19th century when many neo-gothic elements were added, including the iconic bridge.
